Bath

Bath is a non-residential centre, so there isn’t any accommodation available for teachers or activity leaders from outside the area.  However, if you were interested in staying with one of our host families while teaching on the course, then it would still be possible for you to work in this fantastic location.

Bath – a World Heritage Site

The city of Bath, a World Heritage Site, is one of the most fascinating cities in England.  The city, which developed around its hot spring waters, is a remarkable blend of Roman, medieval and Georgian architecture.  It is a compact city surrounded on all sides by a series of hills, and an easy walk around the centre will take in the Grand Crescent and Circus (famous Bath addresses) the Roman Baths, Bath Abbey, Pulteney Bridge and much, much more.

In addition to the historical heritage, Bath also offers a thriving shopping centre and excellent leisure facilities.  These facilities have been boosted by the completion of the extensive redevelopment of the southern part of the city around the train and bus stations.

Prior Park College

This is a change of venue for Elac in Bath.

Our course takes place at Prior Park College, an impressive independent school with amazing views overlooking Bath. The building was originally built in the Palladian style for Ralph Allen, a wealthy businessman who wanted to demonstrate the beauty of Bath stone.  Set in 57 acres (23 hectares) of parkland, the grounds provide a wealth of sports facilities including tennis courts, Astroturf pitches and football pitches.
In addition to the main school building, there are purpose-built and well-equipped classrooms, a school hall for drama productions, discos and talent shows, arts and crafts and music rooms.
Coach transport is provided to take students to and from their host families.

Elac Excursions

All staff will be involved at some point in accompanying students on excursions.  There are 3 full day excursions included in the typical programme in Bath:

London

The London visit focuses on a walking tour of the principal sights, including the Houses of Parliament, Trafalgar Square, and Buckingham Palace.  The tour ends with some free time for the students to do some shopping.  There are no included entrances on this visit.

Oxford

If you haven’t been to Oxford before, then you’ll enjoy accompanying the students on this trip.  The city has so much to offer by way of history, much of it surrounding the university, which together with Cambridge is among the oldest and best known universities in Europe.

Oxford University is made up of a number of independent colleges, and these are scattered throughout the city centre.  During the visit the students (and teachers) have the opportunity to visit one of these colleges, so that you can get a feel of what it is like to study there.

Following the walking tour and college visit, there will be free time for the students to visit the shops or perhaps try their hand at punting – do point out the high probability of their getting rather wet!

Bristol

The Bristol excursion is done by train (15 minutes) and then a transfer to a ferry for a tour of the harbour area.  Bristol’s importance is based on its sea-seafaring tradition.  By the 14th century the city was trading with several countries including Spain, Portugal and Iceland.

In the mid 18th century Bristol became England's second biggest city.  During this time Britain was flooded with goods imported via Bristol including sugar cane, tobacco, rum and cocoa.  There is also the darker side to Bristol’s past – slavery – which the students will learn something of.

Stonehenge & Salisbury

For students on a three-week course, the fourth full-day excursion is to Stonehenge and Salisbury.  The coach goes first to Stonehenge where the students will have an audio tour for around an hour, before heading into Salisbury to visit the beautiful cathedral, with the tallest spire in Britain.

At the end of the visit they will be able to spend time in the delightful market town of Salisbury, enjoying a walk in the bustling market square, or looking at the beautiful and historic half-timbered buildings.

If you enjoy taking students on excursions, or you just want to ‘work more earn more’, then let the Activity Co-ordinator know that you are keen to get involved.
