Here's what you need to do.
Click
here to download a copy of Elac's document called The Academic
Programme – information and advice. This document contains
Elac's syllabus and much else. It
will open in a new window so you can easily switch between screens.
If you don't want to do that, print out a copy and have it at your elbow
while we take you through the induction process.
(Note: if you are running
Adobe X, you will need to disable Protected Mode to read these files on
line. [Go to Edit-Preferences-General and untick the last box.] It may be easier to right-click and save the files before
reading them.)
Now,
 |
Read through the
first two sections – The Elac Approach and Speak English! |
 |
Now minimise the window (or turn over your
copy of the document) and ask yourself these
questions:
 |
Can I think of three of the nine ways
to encourage my learners to speak English? |
 |
Which ways seems most suited to my
teaching style? |
 |
What will be the first two of my
teacher's duties when we draw up the class contract on the first
day? |
 |
Who do I see if I'm having problems
getting some people to speak English? |
|
 |
Now read through
the sections on The Aims of our programme and Improving motivation and
ask yourself:
 |
How's my handwriting and board
organisation? Score it from 1 to 10. |
 |
If I've scored below 5, what I am
going to do now to make it better? |
 |
Why should I maintain a positive
attitude to British culture? |
 |
How am I going to dress when I teach? |
|
 |
Now read on
to the bottom of page 4 and then click this
for a quick quiz.
|
 |
Welcome back. Now
read through the first part of the
Elac syllabus – levels.
Without looking again, which level is
higher – C1 or A1?
|
 |
Now look through
the skills syllabus, to the end of page 9 and try this
. You will probably have to check before you can
confidently answer the questions. Don't worry – this quiz is
designed to help you become familiar with the syllabus; it's not a
memory test!
|
 |
Welcome back. Now
skim the next part of the syllabus –
structures, vocabulary and pronunciation – down to the end of page 11.
When you've done that, try this
.
|
 |
Right. Now
read through
to the end of the document and try the last
.
|
 |
Good. One final question – which
bits did you have the most trouble with? Please go back and
review those areas. It's important that you are up to speed from
the first day of your contract.
|
Go back and click on any
to try a test again.
